Tourism in Tsuruga

TSURUGA,

A traveling port town

Tsuruga, a vital port town on the Sea of Japan, has long prospered as a gateway to the continent. In 1882 (Meiji 15), the railway between Tsuruga and Nagahama was inaugurated, making Tsuruga the first town on the Sea of Japan side to have a railway.

During the Meiji to early Showa periods, Tsuruga Port flourished with the establishment of a direct regular route to Vladivostok, Russia, and served as a transit hub for the Eurasian international train connecting Tokyo and Paris. As a result, Tsuruga still boasts numerous retro romantic spots related to modern port facilities and railways.

Seasonal events and features are held throughout the year, offering various experiential content and model courses. Additionally, there are numerous gourmet options and local souvenirs to explore.

In March 2024, the extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Tsuruga will further improve access from the Tokyo metropolitan area. We invite you to fully enjoy Tsuruga, a representative city on the Sea of Japan.
